St George’s is of 1540 and looks neat and pretty from the outside with its shingled wooden bell turret. Within it has so many outstanding wooden features: Original roof beams. 18th century three-decker pulpit. An old chest with a very small aperture to allow only the silver coins as decreed by Edward the Sixth to be collected for the poor. .A rare 17th century painting on wood to resemble a monument: this lady kneeling at a desk was the widow of Sir Thomas Lynch, Governor of Jamaica. He was reputed to be the first to have sent sugar from the West Indies. Wadham Diggle (was that really his name?) was rector here for over fifty years from 1777-1828. Most remarkable is the brick south chapel - housing a family pew divided into two with an entrance outside the church. Built for the Duke of Newcastle and his brother, both have fireplaces and high box pews for the servants. |
